The purpose of the project is to illustrate your knowledge of the theoretical orientation you have been
assigned by role-playing a counseling session in which the therapist is demonstrating the key concepts,
interventions, beliefs, and attitudes of that counseling style. The role-play should consist of a client (this can
be a friend/family member or another student) that presents to counseling with a specific issue. The
counselor will then evaluate the issue, develop treatment goals, and counsel this client from the
perspective of the theory. It is critical that you showcase the role of the counselor and the key components
of therapy including special techniques that are representative of your theory. You should NOT discuss
historical concepts, or theoretical components during this role play. The goal is to bring the theory to life in
the counseling session. Tasks of project: 1. Create a story for your fictional client (played by someone
else). Give us some background on the client and background on their current problem. Why are they
coming to therapy? What are their goals? How is this problem affecting their daily life? 2. You will now
“therapize” this fictional client according to the theoretical orientation you were assigned at the beginning of
class. You will want to make sure that in the video you are adequately portraying the following: a. The view
of the client’s problem according to the theoretical orientation b. The use of specific techniques in treating
the client c. The overall tone and role of the therapist towards the client. You should be capturing the
essence of this type of therapist.
