Please write about how the U.S. federal government and Pennsylvania state government responded to
coal miner strikes and other Pennsylvania coal labor unrest. I would like to have at least 4 sources,
preferably books and maybe a primary source or two. Please do not include articles as sources unless they
are from the time of the strike/instance of labor unrest. Please cover the state and federal responses since
the start of the coal industry in Pennsylvania (19th century) up until the present day.
The particular instances of labor unrest that are of interest are:
1902 anthracite strike
1910-1911 Westmoreland Strike
However, please include other ones, especially before 1900 if you can find them.
Please do NOT talk about the private police forces (even though there was government involvement in
them) such as the coal and iron police or Pinkertons involved in maintaining order among coal miners in
Pennsylvania. Please just focus on what government officials (both Pennsylvanian politicians and federal
politicians) did to stop and prevent coal miner labor disputes.
