Oceania, 1984: Well Being in a Totalitarian System

Oceania, 1984 is a gloomy, grey place by our accounts. People are constantly being watched, totally controlled, everyone wearing the same grey clothes. Happiness is the main output from a higher sense of well-being, but well-being is completely in perspective to what a certain society values most. How does our notion of well-being differ from theirs? And how do these differences affect happiness in Oceania compared to ours? This is an important part of every society to look at, if not the most important, because after all, what is life without happiness? My research will be done using the book and film of 1984, as well as online sources if needed.
