The point of the technical report is twofold, to improve writing skills and to learn something about building
construction. One of the outcomes for the course is to communicate effectively in writing. Speaking is for
hearing as writing is for reading. Rework your report until you produce what you intend. Whether it achieves
the intended purpose is then up to the reader. Communication (reading, writing, speaking or listening) is
probably the most important thing that you will do in any career that you choose. It is of my opinion; you will
do well if you learn how to use the language not only properly but effectively. Language, math and the arts
are different ways of communicating. When you research, try to understand what is written and incorporate
this into your own style. Do not copy things unless you give credit to the source.
Chapter Report Organization:
This report shall be a minimum of fifteen pages. It will include at least three references. Use APA format.
You need to go to the library and look up the form for the title page, how to footnote, reference and so forth.
Or you can use the project report format that I have passed out.
Proper grammar is expected and appreciated. Each section will have at least four paragraphs and should
start with an introductory paragraph and will end with a conclusion paragraph. The introductory paragraph
should tell the reader in a nutshell what the section is about. The conclusion should present your section in
summary. Each paragraph should contain a topic sentence saying what the paragraph is about. Eachparagraph should be indented.
Use spell check.
Purpose of a citation:
Past: A citation gives credit to person from whom you obtained the information from. It also adds validity to
your report in that it shows you have researched the topic and this is not your own idea.
Present: Citations will keep you from plagiarism.
Future: Citations allow you to share resources with readers and permits the reader to research your
statements.

Chapter report will be due one week after the topic has been discussed. I will check it and you will have two
weeks after to turn your corrected report back in to me for final grading. No reports will be accepted after
Monday, November 23th.

Requirements of chapter report:
1) A-Frame house built in the mountain northwest of Naples, Idaho.
2) Occupants are young couple in their 30’s.
3) Has 5 heavy items on the walls. (50 lbs. each) (one upstairs)
4) Has 4 additional heavy items on floor. (about 250 lbs. each) (two upstairs)
5) Uses upstairs as both bedroom and office.
6) House built mainly of Douglas Fir, CIF’s and SIP Panels.
7) Let me know how you would rate it for LEED certification.
Your chapter report should cover what the model house requires or needs to have used from your chapter.
If your chapter is covering Joints and Sealants, then tell me what joints are in the house and what sealants
that would be required. Do NOT copy word for word from the book.
You must use three references; one will be the book used in class while the other two should be from the
library (ask a librarian for assistance finding your two references). Make sure you cite all three references
properly.
