Ongoing Journal Writing Assignment
Objectives: Students will be able to:
– Evaluate the development of the scientific method from ancient times to the 20th century.
– Apply the scientific method in the development of the basic concepts of modern science.
Your ongoing journal is a place for you to reflect on what we are reading, discussing and learning throughout the semester. Your entries should not simply consist of a summary, but strive to analyze science and the way science is being conducted over time. Periodically, you will be asked to add an entry to your journal. Your entry should consist of the following:
– A brief summary of the time period or scientist you were asked to journal about.
– The steps of the scientific method you feel were being used during that time or by that person.
– An example or scientific study (from readings or research) that shows those steps being used.
– Your opinion on how you think the scientific method is evolving.
Feel free to make connections between journal entries or address other time periods or people from class even if you were not asked to specifically journal about them. These entries should be written in paragraph form, and should include citations where necessary. Remember that citations are needed when you refer to an author’s ideas as well as when you quote from a text. At the end of the course, you will be asked to do a final summary regarding how the scientific method evolved over time and whether you feel it is still relevant (or should be updated) for modern science. This journal will be submitted with your final exam.
